The boulder playground — reef life wrapped around giant granite

Every Tuesday

Island #7 is where the Similans start to feel dramatic underwater. The landscape becomes more sculpted and adventurous: granite boulders stacked into natural formations, reef slopes that keep changing as you move, and pockets of coral life tucked into every corner. It’s the kind of place where the dive feels like a journey — not just a swim over coral, but a route through real underwater terrain.

One of the standout features here is how much variety you can get in a single day — from vibrant reef sections to sandier areas, then suddenly a fan-covered pinnacle or boulder ridge that completely changes the vibe. When conditions line up, the area has that “open Andaman” energy — more space, more movement, and a higher chance of those moments where something larger glides past in the blue. It’s a brilliant upgrade from the easy island days: still scenic and fun, but with more structure, more atmosphere, and more of that explore feeling.

Tour Location

Similan Islands #7 – Granite boulders, dreamy reefs, and that “real Similan” feeling

Similan Island #7 (Ko Payu) is where the Similans start to feel seriously wild underwater: stacked granite boulders, dramatic reef shapes, and clear blue water that makes every dive look cinematic. It’s a brilliant mix of relaxed reef scenery and more dynamic structure, so you get both easy cruising and those moments where you drop around a corner and the whole ocean opens up.
This area is especially loved for its boulder landscapes and reef slopes that shift from shallow coral gardens into deeper terrain. The rocks create natural channels, small swim-throughs, and sheltered pockets where marine life stacks up. Expect thick schools of reef fish, hunting trevallies in the blue, and plenty of “stop-and-stare” details on the rock faces like nudibranchs, shrimp, and perfectly camouflaged critters if you take your time.
What makes #7 feel unique is the variety in one day: one dive can be calm and scenic with coral and reef fish everywhere, the next can feel more energetic with current lines bringing in action and bigger encounters. Turtles are common cruisers around the reefs, and on the right days you can get that special Similan bonus: pelagic surprises gliding past the boulders while the reef below stays packed with color.

Similan National Park Rules

  • Season: The Similan Islands are closed every year from 16 May to 14 October and open from 15 October to 15 May.
  • No drones: Drone flights are strictly prohibited.
  • No single-use plastics: Many Thai National Parks prohibit single-use plastic items (and foam containers). Please avoid bringing disposable plastic/foam packaging into the park.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only: Thai National Parks have announced bans on certain chemical sunscreens that are harmful to coral. Please use reef-safe sunscreen or protective clothing instead.
  • Respect wildlife: Do not touch, chase, or disturb marine life. Never stand on coral or the seabed, and never take shells or coral as souvenirs.
  • Follow park staff & boat crew instructions: Rules can change depending on conservation measures and conditions. Always follow the guide briefing and any ranger instructions.

New Thailand Diving & Snorkeling Rules

Thailand introduced stricter nationwide standards for diving and snorkeling activities (effective 22 April 2025) to protect coral reefs and improve safety.
  • Supervision required: Every trip must be accompanied by a certified dive supervisor or assistant.
  • Life jackets for snorkeling near coral: Life vests must be provided and worn when snorkeling near coral reefs (unless the tourist holds a recognized freediving certificate).
  • Mandatory briefing: Guests must receive a briefing on laws, safety, and responsible marine practices before activities.
  • Group ratios: Limits apply to how many guests one supervisor can oversee (different limits for deep diving vs snorkeling/freediving, and for training sessions).
  • Camera rules: Underwater photography is restricted unless the diver is qualified (e.g., Advanced certification or 40 logged dives) and can show proof if requested.
  • Reef distance: Divers must stay at least 2 metres above coral heads, and fin control must be demonstrated before approaching coral areas.
To comply with these rules, reminder: we may limit snorkeling approach to reefs, and we may ask guests to leave cameras on board if requirements are not met. Divers are expected to control their buoyancy for their own safety and the safety of the guide, group and environment.
