Local wreck diving — history, wildlife, and proper adventure close to Khao Lak

Wreck explorations right off the Khao Lak coast

Local diving is where you get a totally different side of the Andaman Sea: real wrecks, fish life packed into metal structures, and that exciting “explore” feeling without the long ride to the islands. These dives are all about atmosphere — schools of fish using the wreck as shelter, surprising marine life hiding in the dark corners, and the kind of dive where every swim-through and doorway feels like a discovery.

It’s a perfect option if you want a full dive day with something unique: wreck scenery, photogenic structures, and a more adventurous vibe than reef-only diving. Depending on the site and conditions, the wrecks range from easy and fun to more challenging and dramatic — and we’ll always brief you clearly on what to expect before you jump in.

Tour Location

Local Wreck Diving – Khao Lak Coast

Local diving off Khao Lak is all about wreck adventure without the long offshore ride: sunken tin-mining relics, purpose-sunk ships, and artificial reefs that have turned into full-on fish cities. These sites are close, varied, and surprisingly addictive because every wreck has its own mood, structure, and “what will we find today?” energy.
On classic wreck days like Boonsung, you get that iconic Khao Lak scene: metal frames covered in life, clouds of snapper and juvenile barracuda, and the kind of critter-hunting that keeps photographers busy for two dives straight. Morays are a real highlight here, including the famous honeycomb/hexagon moray eel that loves the wreck’s darker corners.
If you want something different, sites like the T13 Underwater Museum add a fun “artificial reef playground” vibe, with submerged structures that attract all kinds of life, from nudibranchs and pufferfish to resident rays that hang around the bigger objects. And for experienced divers, deeper wrecks like MV Sea Chart deliver that big-ship feeling, often with strong currents, huge schools in the blue, and the chance of something very big cruising past.

New Thailand Diving & Snorkeling Rules

Thailand introduced stricter nationwide standards for diving and snorkeling activities (effective 22 April 2025) to protect coral reefs and improve safety.
  • Supervision required: Every trip must be accompanied by a certified dive supervisor or assistant.
  • Life jackets for snorkeling near coral: Life vests must be provided and worn when snorkeling near coral reefs (unless the tourist holds a recognized freediving certificate).
  • Mandatory briefing: Guests must receive a briefing on laws, safety, and responsible marine practices before activities.
  • Group ratios: Limits apply to how many guests one supervisor can oversee (different limits for deep diving vs snorkeling/freediving, and for training sessions).
  • Camera rules: Underwater photography is restricted unless the diver is qualified (e.g., Advanced certification or 40 logged dives) and can show proof if requested.
  • Reef distance: Divers must stay at least 2 metres above coral heads, and fin control must be demonstrated before approaching coral areas.
To comply with these rules, reminder: we may limit snorkeling approach to reefs, and we may ask guests to leave cameras on board if requirements are not met. Divers are expected to control their buoyancy for their own safety and the safety of the guide, group and environment.
