New Divers
Do I need to know how to swim?
For a try dive, you should be comfortable in water (you’re always closely supervised). For full certifications, you’ll need to complete basic swim/float requirements.
Is scuba diving safe?
Yes — when you dive within your training, follow briefings, use well-maintained equipment, and dive with professionals. We keep things conservative and safety-first.
What’s the minimum age to dive/snorkel?
Scuba is usually from age 10+ (junior programs). Snorkeling can be younger on some trips (with a parent/guardian). Exact minimum depends on the trip and conditions.
Can I dive if I’ve never tried before?
Yes. Start with a Try Dive / Discover Scuba program — we teach the basics first, then you do a supervised open-water dive.
What’s the difference: Discover Scuba Diving vs Open Water course?
Discover/Try Dive is a one-time experience (no certification). Open Water is a full course that certifies you to dive with a buddy (within limits) worldwide.
How long does it take to get certified?
Open Water typically takes about 3 days (sometimes 2–4 depending on schedule, eLearning, and conditions).
Courses & Certifications
Which course should I take (DSD, OWD, AOW, specialties)?
If you’re not sure you’ll love diving: Try Dive/DSD. If you want to become a diver: Open Water. If you’re already certified: Advanced + specialties (Nitrox/Deep/Wreck, etc.) based on your goals.
What are the prerequisites for each course?
Usually: minimum age, basic water comfort, and a completed medical questionnaire. Advanced/specialties require the relevant previous certification level.
How many days does each course take?
Try Dive/DSD: half day to 1 day. Open Water: ~3 days. Advanced: ~2 days. Specialties: often 1–2 days (Nitrox can be theory-only).
What if I don’t finish the course in time?
No problem — we can usually continue on another date, or do a referral/continuation plan so you finish later without starting over.
Can I do eLearning before arriving?
Yes — eLearning is recommended. It saves holiday time and makes the in-water training smoother.
Which agency do you teach (PADI/SSI) and does it matter?
We teach SSI. Both are internationally recognized — what matters most is quality training and diving regularly after.
Do certifications expire?
No — recreational certifications don’t expire. If you haven’t dived in a long time, a refresher/skills update is strongly recommended.
Fun dives & dive sites
What dive sites do you go to from Khao Lak?
Depending on season and conditions: local sites (including wreck/reef options) and trips toward Similan area, Surin area, and Richelieu Rock options.
Which sites are best for beginners / advanced divers?
Beginners: calm, shallow reefs and easy profiles. Advanced: sites with stronger currents/depth like pinnacles and remote areas. We match you to sites based on experience and conditions.
How many dives per day?
Day trips are 2 dives. On Saturday we do 3 dives.
What’s the difference between Similan / Surin / Richelieu Rock?
Similan: granite boulders + reefs, great visibility. Surin: remote reefs/marine life. Richelieu Rock: iconic pinnacle, often rich macro and bigger-life chances, sometimes stronger currents.
Boat day & logistics
What time do boats depart / return?
Most trips start early: hotel pickup is usually around 07:00–07:30. Return is typically late afternoon/early evening (varies by trip and sea conditions).
Do you offer hotel pickup? Which areas?
Yes — shared pickup is usually available around Khao Lak area (exact zones depend on the trip). We confirm pickup time/location after booking.
What food and drinks are there?
Usually Thai-style lunch, fruit/snacks, and drinking water. Some trips include soft drinks, tea/coffee — details depend on the boat/trip.
What should I wear/bring on the boat?
Swimwear, towel, hat, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, dry bag, light long-sleeve for sun/wind, and some cash (e.g., park fees, tips, extras).
Do you have vegetarian/vegan options?
Often yes — tell us in advance so we can arrange it with the boat crew.
Do you have lockers / storage at the shop?
We have space for bags at the shop. For valuables, keep items minimal and ask staff for the safest option.
Do you speak English/Thai/other languages?
English, German and Thai are standard. Other languages depend on which staff/guides are scheduled that day.
Safety & medical
Do I need a medical certificate?
Not always. You’ll complete a medical questionnaire — if you answer “yes” to certain questions, you’ll need doctor clearance before diving.
What health conditions can prevent diving?
Examples include certain heart/lung conditions, uncontrolled asthma, epilepsy/seizures, serious ear/sinus problems, recent surgery, and pregnancy. When unsure, get diving-specific medical advice.
What if I can’t equalize / have ear problems?
We go slowly and teach techniques. If you have pain or can’t equalize, you must stop the descent. We can reschedule, adjust the plan, or recommend seeing a doctor if needed.
Can I dive while pregnant?
No — scuba diving is not recommended during pregnancy.
What about asthma/diabetes/heart conditions?
Sometimes possible if well-controlled and cleared by a doctor familiar with diving medicine. Safety comes first — we’ll ask for proper clearance when needed.
What emergency oxygen / first aid do you carry?
Emergency oxygen and first-aid equipment are standard on dive operations, and staff are trained in emergency procedures and evacuation coordination.
Equipment
Is equipment included?
Courses usually include required training equipment. Fun dives often include tanks/weights/guide, with full gear rental available if you need it. We confirm what’s included per trip.
What should I bring (mask, rash guard, etc.)?
If you have your own mask/snorkel, bring it for best comfort. Also: rash guard, anti-fog, any meds you need, and a reusable water bottle.
Do you have different wetsuit thickness options?
Typical water is warm, so 3 mm is common. Other options may be available depending on stock and your comfort (tell us what you prefer).
Can I use my own gear?
Yes. We’ll do a quick safety check and help you set it up correctly for the boat and conditions.
Do you offer Nitrox?
Yes — Nitrox is available for certified divers, and Nitrox courses can be arranged.
Do you rent computers / torches / cameras?
Yes — items like dive computers and torches are commonly available to rent. Ask us when booking so we can reserve availability. We don’t rent out cameras but our guides might have a camera to take pictures and videos of you.
Can I bring a GoPro?
Yes. Use a secure attachment (wrist lanyard + mount), keep buoyancy controlled, and never chase or touch marine life for shots.
Before & after diving
Can I fly after diving?
Follow your dive computer. As a guideline: minimum 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive, 18 hours after repetitive/multi-day diving — and 24 hours is the safer, conservative choice.
Can I drink alcohol after diving?
It’s best to avoid alcohol between dives and keep it light after diving. Hydrate well first — alcohol plus sun/sea can increase dehydration and fatigue.
What should I eat/drink on dive days?
Eat a light breakfast, avoid heavy/greasy food, and hydrate consistently (water + electrolytes). Bring snacks if you get hungry easily.
Seasickness tips?
Sleep well, avoid alcohol the night before, eat light, stay hydrated, and sit mid-boat where it’s steadier. If you use medication, take it early (as directed) before the boat ride.
Sleep & hydration tips?
Good sleep and steady hydration make a big difference. Start drinking water the day before, use sun protection, and avoid arriving hungover.
Pricing, booking & policies
How do I book?
Message us with your preferred date + activity + certification level. Use the website contact form or email contact@medivingkhaolak.com, or WhatsApp/call for fast confirmation.
Do you require a deposit?
Some trips (especially limited seats/high season) may require a deposit to secure your place. We’ll tell you clearly before confirming the booking.
What’s your cancellation / refund policy?
It depends on how close to the trip you cancel and the type of trip. Please refer to your Refund Policy page and your booking confirmation terms.
What happens if weather cancels the trip?
Safety first. If a trip is cancelled for weather/sea conditions, we offer rescheduling options and handle refunds/credits according to the policy and supplier terms.
Can I reschedule?
In most cases yes, subject to availability and notice. Contact us as early as possible and we’ll find the best alternative.
Are park fees included?
Often not — marine park fees are set by authorities and can change. We’ll tell you what applies to your specific trip and how/when to pay.
Payment methods accepted?
Cash is widely accepted. Credit card may be available; we’ll confirm the options when you book.
Snorkeling & non-divers
Can non-divers join the boat?
Yes on snorkeling trips. On dive trips, non-diver “ride-along” availability depends on the boat and free space — ask us in advance.
Is snorkeling good in the same areas?
Yes — many of the same islands/reefs have excellent snorkeling, especially in the main season when the sea is calmer and visibility is higher.
Is it suitable for kids?
Often yes for snorkeling, depending on minimum age rules, sea conditions, and the child’s comfort in water. Life jackets are typically available.
Can I snorkel at the Similans/Surins?
Yes during open season (subject to marine park rules and weather). We can recommend the best trip for your group.
Environment & marine life
What marine life can I expect to see?
Reef fish, turtles, rays, and lots of reef life are common. Larger pelagics (like manta/whale shark) are possible but never guaranteed — nature decides.
What’s your eco policy (no touch, no feeding, reef-safe sunscreen)?
No touching or feeding marine life, good buoyancy, no collecting, and we encourage reef-safe sunscreen and minimizing single-use plastic.
Do you support conservation projects?
We support reef-friendly diving and marine-park compliance as a baseline. Ask us what local initiatives/cleanups are currently active during your visit.
Do you follow marine park rules and mooring buoy practices?
Yes — we follow marine park regulations, responsible guiding standards, and use appropriate procedures to reduce reef impact.
Weather & seasons
When is the best season to dive in Khao Lak?
Main season is typically October to April/May, when seas are calmer and offshore parks are open.
Do you dive in monsoon season?
Offshore parks typically close in the monsoon months. Some local/alternative diving may still be possible depending on conditions — we advise the safest options.
Visibility and water temperature (typical ranges)
Typical water temperature is around 27–30°C. Visibility often ranges roughly 10–30 m (can be higher in peak season and lower in rougher months).
What’s the chance trips are cancelled?
Lowest in peak season, higher in shoulder/monsoon periods. We only run trips when conditions are safe and reasonable for the planned activity.
